Converting your birds from Seed to Pellet

We firmly believe that pellets are the optimum base for your birds diet.  Birds in the wild do NOT eat only dry seed.

We have fed Pellets as a base for over 15 years. Almost exclusively always Australian Owned & Made Vetafarm Pellets.

Good quality pellets have been specifically formulated for the dietary requirements of specific bird groups, be they native or exotic.  In our experience there is also far less ( as low as 4%) wastage factor.

The following ideas may assist you to move your birds over to a pellet diet.  Each bird will be different - some have no problem with a change to their diet and some will take time to convert.

  • Use the same feed container(s) they are used to.
  • Mix some pellets in with their usual food, gradually increasing the proportion of pellets in the mix.
  • Put pellets on top of their seed.  As they dig down for the seed, they will become accustomed to the pellets being associated with food.
  • For very fussy eaters, you could add some hot water to the pellets to make a dough, and mix their seed into this.
This mix would need to be discarded after 2 hours to prevent spoilage.

Keep a close eye on your birds during the process and make sure they are still feeding.

Once the conversion process is complete, you can relax with the peace of mind that your bird is getting the best nutrition available from their base diet.

Of course, with your chicks, start them on pellets directly as part of their weaning  >
